It’s that time of the year, that occurs every second year, the Avalon International Air Show 🙂

A cloudy day which did not do much for shooting the flight demonstrations but the static displays, as is my inclination, worked very well. I spent the day shooting with Peter Myers, who was kind enough to drive, and we captured many, many photons.

An air show is a good opportunity to get the juices flowing and, since I’ve been in a bit of a shooting motivational slump recently, a good pick me up. Also it is a good opportunity to allow me to consider what it is I enjoy about shooting situations such as these.

  • Finding a point of view or composition that might not jump to everyone’s eye is a major part of it. I do not claim to be capturing things that no one else would but I am not sure that everyone would see it
  • Symmetrical compositions and straight on and square seems to be things that catch my eye, a graphic sense of shape and the use of negative space as a part of the composition itself
  • Losing myself in just looking and previsualising, taking my time to find the image that originally caught my attention
  • And hey, just enjoying trying to take a reasonable photo, something I can be happy with

And yes, I did enjoy myself.
